What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a very small piece of metal that is surgically placed into your gums and jaw bone in the area where you’ve lost a tooth. This titanium post functions as an artificial tooth root, allowing our Bonney Lake dentists to restore your smile with a dental implant. Dental Implant Treatment Options

Single-Tooth Implants

Single-tooth dental implants use one dental crown and one dental implant to restore a single missing tooth. This is the most common type of dental implant.

Implant-Supported Bridge

An implant-supported bridge uses two dental implants to restore a row of three or more missing teeth. This is a good option if you’re missing a few teeth in a row, and you’re not a good candidate for a traditional dental bridge.

Full-Mouth Implants

Full-mouth implants restore your entire smile. They use a series of 4-6 implants that are placed into the upper, lower, or both jaws. Then, these implants support a set of permanent or removable implant-supported dentures. Compared to traditional dentures, full-mouth implants last longer, look and feel more natural, and provide superior comfort.

Placing your implant

After you’re approved for treatment, you’ll come to our office. Dr. Ni or Dr. Shahi will clean, numb, and prepare your mouth. Then, your dentist will open up the gum and bone tissue, place your implant, and suture the area shut.

Healing and recovery

You’ll be sent home to recover. It takes about two weeks to heal from the initial surgery, but it will take up to six months for your jaw bone to integrate with your dental implant. You’ll come back to our office for a few follow-ups during this time to check on your progress. Dr. Ni or Dr. Shahi will also start designing your dental crown (false tooth) or other implant restoration.

Final implant restoration

Once your dental implant has healed completely, you’ll come back to our office for your final appointment. Dr. Shahi or Dr. Ni will attach your dental crown to your tooth permanently, restoring your smile and your bite. You’ll be sent home to enjoy your new smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

One of the most common concerns for patients considering dental implants is whether they can proceed with the procedure if they have experienced bone loss. The good news is that even with bone loss, dental implants can still be a viable option. Bone loss often occurs when a tooth has been missing for an extended period, as the jawbone begins to deteriorate without the stimulation of a tooth root.

However, advancements in dental technology have made it possible to overcome this issue. Procedures such as bone grafting can rebuild and strengthen the jawbone, creating a solid foundation for implants. At Dental Health Group, Dr. Shahi and Dr. Ni are adept at evaluating bone density and structure, offering solutions that cater to each patient’s unique situation. They will guide you through the process, ensuring that you receive the best possible care and outcome.

If you're in Bonney Lake, WA, and considering dental implants, rest assured that Dental Health Group is equipped with the expertise and technology to address your needs and concerns. With a focus on patient education and comfort, Dr. Shahi and Dr. Ni are committed to helping you achieve a healthy, confident smile.

Post-surgery care is crucial to the success of dental implants, and understanding dietary restrictions is an essential part of this process. After receiving dental implants, it's recommended to stick to a soft food diet for the first few days. Foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies are great options. This allows the surgical site to heal without undue pressure or irritation.

Gradually, as you heal and any swelling diminishes, you can reintroduce regular foods. Most patients can resume their normal eating habits within a week, but it’s important to follow the specific instructions provided by your dentist. Dr. Shahi and Dr. Ni will provide you with a comprehensive post-operative care plan, ensuring you know exactly what to expect and how to care for your new implants as they integrate with your jawbone.

When considering dental implants, safety is a paramount concern for many patients. Dental implants have a long-standing track record of safety and effectiveness, with decades of research and technological advancements backing their use. They are crafted from biocompatible materials, such as titanium, which integrate seamlessly with your jawbone, minimizing the risk of rejection or complications.

The procedure itself is highly standardized, and when performed by experienced professionals like Dr. Shahi and Dr. Ni, the risk of complications is minimal. These implants not only restore the functionality of your teeth but also preserve your jawbone and overall oral health. At Dental Health Group, we ensure that every patient undergoes a thorough evaluation to determine their suitability for the procedure, addressing any concerns and tailoring the treatment to individual needs.

Understanding what to expect from dental implant procedures can ease any apprehensions you might have. Many patients wonder, "Do dental implants hurt?" The short answer is that while the procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia to ensure that you feel no pain during the surgery, some discomfort is typical afterward. This discomfort is similar to what you might experience after a tooth extraction.

You may feel some swelling, minor bruising, or tenderness in the gums and jaw, but these symptoms are generally manageable with over-the-counter pain medications and should subside within a few days. At Dental Health Group, Dr. Gurpreet Shahi and Dr. Gentai Ni prioritize patient comfort, offering personalized care and guidance to ensure your experience is as smooth and pain-free as possible.

The expected lifespan of dental implants is 30 years or longer. As long as you maintain good oral hygiene, it’s entirely possible for your implants to last for the rest of your life. Brush your teeth regularly, eat a healthy diet, and make sure that you come to Dental Health Group for a checkup every six months.

No. Unfortunately, most dental plans will not cover the cost of dental implants, despite the fact that dental implants are the best way to restore missing teeth. However, some dental insurance companies may cover the cost of tooth extractions and some other treatments that may be needed for a dental implant.
